The main feature of the Planum Boreum is a large fissure or canyon in the Martian Polar Ice Cap called Chasma Boreale. It is up to 100 km wide and features scarps up to 2 km high. This photo of it, was taken with the high resolution camera (HIRES) on the NASA/JPL Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

I entered a small alien canyon
Seeking answers about myself
Among it’s twisted scarps
The walls were layered with memories
Swirled with experiences not remembered
At the bottom, it’s blue sands
Shifted and swelled, moving forward
Like waves on a calm sea of silence
Rolling towards life’s shore
Where, there, their journey would end
As life’s journey also must come ashore
Crest, and then finally end some day
As I climbed upward, I passed the layers
Of light happy remembrance
And layers of dark deeds, gone and passed
Hidden by time in the recesses of the light
But not forgotten by the unconscious
Only waiting for the minds trigger to push them
Out of the unconscious, and back
Thrust into that cache that waits in the queue
For it’s time to be brought back there to the minds eye
Upward and upward I climbed past miles and miles
Of thoughts, deeds, smells, tastes, laughter, and tears
How does this little mind hold such a canyon?
Where does it put all we’ve thought, all we’ve forgot?
My dog biting my shoe when I was six
My dad bouncing me on his knee and singing silly songs
I reach the top of the cliff
The soil becomes broken and fragmented
Almost a gravel like consistency, filling up the spaces
With current thoughts, current memories
Which will I keep?
Which will I forget?
What part of me decides?
What will be a light layer, and what will be dark?
I’m on the top now
I see the future locked in patches of ice
How will they melt?
Should I start a fire?
No, there are no trees here
Nothing to burn, except desire
Desire is that which releases the future, not time
Time just builds layers
And hides memories
Desire makes us live…
